Books and Music

Oh.  my.  goodness.  It is hot outside.  How hot?  I've read six books so far this summer.  I'm working on my seventh.  Haha.  I don't usually get through that many books in a summer, but it has been nice to take a good chunk out of my reading list.

Here are my very short book reviews:

The Denniston Rose and Heart of Coal by Jenny Pattrick.  These are bestsellers in New Zealand and were sent to me by Sara.  Honestly, they were just okay in my opinion.  I love novels, but this series focuses around a woman who has to endure sickening, gut-wrenching, painful, disgusting abuse as a child.  I know these things happen, but when they are set in a fictional context I feel like the victims of real abuse can be misrepresented which doesn't sit well with me.

His Needs, Her Needs: For Parents by Willard F. Harley.  Great read.  I really enjoyed it and it was a great reminder to me to get out on a date with my husband!  By the way, I'm one of those people who believes that reading books on marriage and parenting is a very good and helpful thing.  I don't agree with every book I read, but they help me shape my own thoughts and opinions!

Dark Life by Kat Falls, Scat by Carl Hiassen, and Flawed Dogs by Berkeley Breathed.  Okay, these are summer reading texts for my students, but I wanted to read them so I know exactly what to ask my kids!  I have one more book to go!

Currently, I'm going through The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren which has been awesome.  I didn't read it when it was super popular back in the day and it has been on my shelf forever, so I figured this summer was the time!  I'm also reading Love Wins by Rob Bell.  It's controversial.  I'm okay with that.  Controversy makes me think.  People forget that they don't have to (or need to) agree with everything an author presents in a book.

Bethany and I have also listened to lots of music thanks to Slacker online radio.  I put on the Raffi station and we're swept away into baby music paradise.

Here are a few of our favorite songs:

I'm Going to Catch You - Laurie Berkner
LadyBug - The Terrible Twos
The Bird Song - The Doodlebops

And of course, anything by Raffi.  How can you not love Baby Beluga and Down by the Bay?  Bethany's reaction to certain songs and music is so cute.  She bobs her head, bounces, smiles, and tries to dance.  She hasn't quite figured out dancing yet!

What have you been listening to and reading?  Share!  I love book and music recommendations!!
