To Sew or Not to Sew?

(Bobby and I wearing Halloween costumes made for us by our grandma, Toto.)

Okay, so tonight I came upon this Snow White costume at Party City on Clearance for $15.  I was shopping with friends for an upcoming baby shower and one of them piped up that it would be super cute if Bethany and I wore matching Snow White costumes and just like that Bethany's Halloween costume was chosen!

Anyway, they had a Disney baby Sleeping Beauty costume on clearance, but we couldn't find baby Snow White.  There are plenty of baby Snow White costumes available online and I'm sure we'll end up going with one of those, but a friend on Facebook got me thinking that I should make one . . . .

Which got me thinking about the amazing custom Rainbow Brite costume and dinosaur costume that my grandma made for me and Bobby when we were little.  My grandmother taught sewing and was definitely a seamstress.  She made Anna and I matching dresses and all kinds of fun outfits when we were children.  The quality was always ridiculously awesome.  I have no idea what happened to the costumes above, but I remember wearing that Rainbow Brite outfit and just LOVING it.  I thought I had the most amazing costume in the world.  She created her own pattern for the dress and put together the coolest rainbow belt.  Bobby's costume bodice even had the ribbing that a dino might have and pillowed triangle spikes that went all the way down the back and down to the tail.  She even made the hand and foot covers.  So cool.

I don't know if I'll be making Bethany's Snow White costume this year or not, but I NEED to learn how to sew.  When Bethany reaches the age that I am in the photo above, I would LOVE for her to have the same treasured memories that I have of amazing homemade costumes.

Another aspiration:  to sew something like this someday!
